The Amazing Avocado; What are the Health Benefits?

Avocados are a high calorie, high fat FRUIT.  Yes, you heard me correctly; Avocado is  a fruit and one of the most nutritious ones out there.  This small fruit packs a wallop with its nutritional value and as an added bonus, it is delicious.  I try to eat at least one per day either plain or in a delicious recipe.  I’ll share a favorite guacamole recipe from Liz Colón  in a bit.

Health Benefits of The Avocado

Avocados are a natural anti-inflammatory and most chronic conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia) have some sort of inflammatory process involved.  They are also a wonderful brain food and have been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages. We cannot forget the other healthy heart benefits of avocados which include helping lower triglycerides and LDL while raising HDL.  They can also help lower or maintain your blood sugar. As avocado are high in fiber, it can help with digestive regularity and are jammed packed with vitamins such at  vitamin B, E, K that help with metabolism, eyes, and bone growth, respectively.  Because of the nutritional value of avocados, some believe that they are also good for anti-aging and cancer prevention!

So we know they are nutritional little fruits but they are also delicious.  Eat them out of hand or in a salad,   Place a slice on top of your hamburger.  Here is a fabulous guacamole recipe by a good friend and neighborhood “foodie” Liz Colón:

3 Ripe Avocado

Avocados (3 ripe)                         Lime
Jalapeno Pepper                            Salt
Cilantro                                         Pepper
Fresh Garlic                                  Hot Sauce

                       Tomato (optional)

Cut the avocados in half, place on cutting board and mash with fork.  SAVE one pit.  Dice 1/2 Jalapeno pepper and add to your taste.  Mince one Large (or 2 small) cloves of garlic.  Mix in 3-4 sprigs of finely chopped cilantro.  Optional:  add one diced tomato. Then squeeze in juice of one lime and several dashes of hot sauce.  Mix together and place in bowl with one pit in the middle.  The pit will prevent discoloration of the guacamole.  Cover and refrigerate until you are ready to serve.

The Amazing Avocado, How can something good for you taste so delicious?

Thanks, Elizabeth for your wonderful feedback. I’m a type of gal who eats avocados out of hand or in salads. I think they are delicious!

  • Health Benefits of Avocado

I do agree with you Sharon that Avocado has many health benefits. Every person have to try eat one per day. I know it is high in fat but the benefits of it are many. Also, Avocado is full of vitamin C and E which both are great for boosting immunity and can help fight off bacteria that cause illness.
